It was an absolutely spectacular afternoon for auto collecting! I had the good fortune of being on the field for batting practice (through the Mariners Season Ticket Holder Memories program). Lots of Mariners players and coaches stopped by during BP and signed!
Nellie Cruz and Kyle Seager both signed memorabilia cards! Although I don’t usually mess with the fancier relic cards, it’s kind of cool to get the more basic ones signed. (I started doing that with Michael Conforto last year.) I’ve been carrying relic cards for Cano, Cruz, and Seager cards to every game this year so it’s nice to get two out of three signed! (Will have to wait a few months on Robbie, you know what I’m sayin’?)
Ryon Healy and Scott Brosious, and Nick Vincent all signed the 2018 Team Ball. They were all pretty chill, even if Brosious did give me hard time about not being a kid. :). Thanks guys.
Guillermo Heredia, Ben Gamel, and King Felix all signed cards 2018 Topps Heritage cards. Sweet! I have seven of them signed so far. Wouldn’t it be nice to get them all signed this year?
I stuck around for the Tigers BP and sure am glad that I did! Ron Gardenhire signed a mid 80’s Mets card. (Did you know that during his playing days he carried around a baseball encyclopedia to collect autos? I knew cause it said so on the back of his card, and he confirmed it. I mentioned Pat Neshek, the active MLBer and avid collector, and Gardenhire said Neshek was one of his players at some point!)
Nick Castellanos, who looks like a guy I went to college with, also signed a card. Thanks man.
When you’re a regular person with a field pass, you need to stay behind the yellow security rope (on the dirt). For most of the time, I was towards the Mariners side between the end of the dugout to behind the back of the batting cage. Then I drifted towards the home plate tunnel. There is a gap in the roping and then it starts up again on the visitors side. The rope extends a little further in front of the dugout on the visitors side. So I saw this dude on the visitors dugout steps talking to a woman. When I recognized him, I ran over there and waited for him to finish his conversation. I asked him if he could sign my ball and he did, very graciously. Even signed on the sweet spot without me asking. Miguel Cabrera!!! Wow wow wee!!! Thank you Miggy!!!
I also got to see Leonys Martin. I welcomed him back to Seattle wished him luck, and he signed a photo card from last year. Thanks man!
It was so awesome to actually be on the field to have this kind of access. Thank you Mariners!
Before the game, I rejoined “the people” on the M’s side. Down the first base line, Ben Gamel, The Mariner Moose, and Guillermo Heredia all signed the team ball. Mitch Haniger signed a card. That dude is a frequent and very gracious signer. Also, Dee Gordon signed my “Gold Glove”. Awesome! Overall a great pregame for autos!
