Yes, it was weird to have Opening Day here in March, but what a nice start for the M’s! They beat Cleveland 2-1.
Very few guys signed today. Gates opened at 4:40 and by the time I got in the M’s were already done with BP. Cleveland took batting practice but very few guys signed. Tyler Naquin signed a card for me, thank you. I was surprised more guys didn’t sign. The routine was thrown off by the Opening Day festivities from about 6:30-6:50. So awesome to welcome back Ichiro! A few of the guys did stretch and so on while Nellie Cruz received his 2017 Silver Slugger and Edgar Martinez DH of the Year award. (How can Edgar not be in the Hall of Fame????) In a somewhat rare occurrence, I was sitting on the Mariners side and so just before the game I was able to get Dee Gordon’s auto! Very cool and very gracious, thanks man!
The Game – Mariners 2, Indians 1
Felix was dealing for 5+ innings. Kluber was very good (pitched the whole game), but he gave up a 1st inning single to Robbie Cano followed by a Nellie Cruz blast to put Seattle up 2-0. Although Ichiro was hitless in his return to Safeco, everybody was psyched to see him. Ichiro!!! Ichiro!!! Cleveland did score one run in the top of the 7th, but the bullpen did what it had to do. There was a little too much drama in the 9th as Edwin Diaz struggled, but he got it together and closed it out for an M’s win in front of 47,149 fans.
