I picked a couple of boxes of 2017 Topps Stadium Club at DJ’s Sportscards ($89.99 + tax, 16 packs, 8 cards per pack). Every year, folks online rave about the photos in Stadium Club in terms of quality and uniqueness. Of course this year there is the additional matter of Aaron Judge fever. When I saw some of the cards online, I wasn’t sure that I was crazy about them. The script lettering wasn’t particularly appealing to me and it looked obstructive.
However, in “real life” the script is not obtrusive at all and the photos once again stand out. As I started opening packs, I was reminded once again why Stadium Club is one of my favorite sets, and was glad that I picked some up for this season. The photography on the base cards is really is nice — a little more dramatic, humorous, and/or “classy” than the rest of the Topps Releases (where they often recycle the same photos). The checklist indicates a good mix of stars, rookies, and legends. I definitely gave an excited cheer and a sigh of relief when I pulled the Aaron Judge base card from the second box! (Whew, solved that problem before it started 🙂 After two boxes, I have 195 of the 300 base cards, need 105, and have 23 doubles.
Each pack has one insert or parallel. There are the standard gold and black foil parallels which are nice, including a Mike Trout black foil parallel! The Power Zone inserts of Pujols, Stanton, and Cano are pretty cool, and so are the Scoreless Streak cards for the pitchers. Contact Sheet and Beam Team inserts are back again. I’m psyched to get a gold Robbie Cano Beam Team card! He of course is fresh off his All-Star Game MVP performance lol. New for this year, are also the Chrome black foil parallels. I got a Roy Oswalt Chrome is pretty chill. However, the Dustin Pedroia Chrome and David Dahl Chrome Refractor made me say, “Whoa!” Great cards.
I saw a couple of errors. The Cole Hamels base card says something about the NL West instead of AL West. Also, the Dansby Swanson Beam Team insert is strange because it has a blurb about Dustin Pedroia on the back (don’t know if that’s a systematic error or if this is an isolated incident).
Getting back to Roy Oswalt, I got a black foil parallel of his on-card auto card # 14 /25, very nice card. I also got a Ryon Healy auto. Of course, I just got an in-person autograph from Ryon Healy literally four days ago, so I’m not sure if I’ll trade or keep this one. The Aaron Nola auto on rainbow foil # 10 /10 is very nice, and I also got another Phillies pitcher auto in Jake Thompson.
Overall, I’m glad I got into Topps Stadium Club again here in 2017. Nice stuff! Sure I’ll go for the base set. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars!
